If you’re planning a trip to the Czech Republic, having a sim card is essential for easy navigation and staying connected. Whether it’s finding the best restaurants, getting directions to your accommodation, booking a taxi, or sharing pictures with your loved ones, having internet access on the go is convenient.
While roaming may seem like an option, international fees can quickly escalate, so we recommend either an eSIM or a local sim card to take advantage of local phone rates. Luckily, obtaining either option in the Czech Republic is hassle-free, but it’s important to know which one suits you best!

Sim cards in the Czech Republic are relatively expensive so I recommend the Airalo Czech Republic eSim for travellers. It costs $22 USD (480 CZK) for 10GB data valid for 30 days which is actually cheaper than the Vodafone Tourist sim which you need to buy in person when you arrive.
If you are on a strict budget and don’t require a lot of data then the O2 prepaid plan for 299 CZK comes with 3GB data valid for 30 days making it the cheapest option. The tradeoff is, of course, you get 7GB less data. This won’t be an issue if you’re only visiting for a few days, but if you’re staying for over a week you may want extra.
If you want plenty of data but also don’t want an eSim, such as if your phone isn’t compatible with eSims (most phones do support eSims including all iPhones since 2018), then you should purchase the Vodafone Tourist sim package. For 499 CZK you will get 10GB data valid for 30 days.
It’s also worth noting that eSims are indisputably more convenient than physical sim cards. Instead of visiting a physical store on your holiday, buying a sim, registering your details and installing a physical sim card, with an eSim you just need to buy it before you leave and it will begin working when you arrive.
In terms of network coverage, O2, T-Mobile and Vodafone all have extensive networks that work well across the entire country. The Airalo Czech Republic eSim uses the same, reliable O2 network.

T-Mobile is known to have both the fastest connection and most expansive network coverage, although O2 and Vodafone are also really great choices. It just depends which store’s location is most convenient for you. Again, bear in mind the absurd pricing for sim cards in the Czech republic for both tourists and locals, so consider an esim over a physical sim card.
T-Mobile is known to be the best telecommunications company in the Czech Republic, offering both great internet speeds and connection country-wide. T-Mobile offers tourist packages with generous data allowances, so you can freely use maps and translation apps during your holiday, as well as social media platforms without running the risk of ending up with no data during your holiday.

Vodafone is a leading mobile network operator in the Czech Republic, as well as a lot of countries around the area. If you don’t speak Czech, it’s easy to buy a sim card in their stores as there’s usually an English-speaking staff member to help out and discuss which plan would be best for your trip. Connection across the country is great, as well as internet speeds.

I have not yet used O2 during my travels to the Czech Republic, but I have heard that data can tend to run out before hitting the amount advertised, which could be very frustrating during your holiday.

Identify the mobile providers in Czech Republic: T-Mobile, Vodafone and O2 are your best options in Czech Republic.
Find your nearest store: Locate a store or retailer by searching on Google Maps for your nearest store or asking at your hotel reception. I’ve never had issues finding a store as they can be found all over any major cities, shopping centers, or tourist areas. You can easily buy sim cards in major airports in Czech Republic. If you’re on a budget it is usually cheaper to use the airport wifi instead and purchase your sim card in a store near your hotel.
Bring the necessary documents: It is mandatory in Czech Republic to bring your passport into the store so that the staff can register it with your sim card. Without this, T-Mobile, Vodafone or O2 staff will be unable to sell you a sim card.
Choose your plan: Either request the plan you are after or consult with the staff in the store to select the right plan for you. My recommendations at the beginning of this guide are likely to be your best option, for example the prepaid plan by T-Mobile that includes 12GB data for 485 CZK.
Pay and activate your card: You can expect to pay 499 CZK to purchase your sim card. The staff in-store will help you install the sim card and activate it for you.
Test: It’s always a good idea to check that you can access the internet before you leave the store. I always try searching for something on Google then refresh my Instagram feed to check it’s working fine before leaving. If it’s not, the staff will be able to help you adjust your settings.
Buying a prepaid sim card for Czech Republic at the airport is usually considered the most convenient option for travellers arriving by plane.
However, airport stores selling sim cards are almost guaranteed to charge inflated prices, so if you are a cost-conscious traveller then you should definitely buy your sim card from a store in the city center.
In addition to this, we would argue that buying physical sim cards at all aren’t particularly convenient now that most people use esim compatible phones. If you are looking for the most convenient option, then buying an esim before you arrive or with the airport wifi is much easier and will save you having to queue up or communicate with staff.
If you must purchase a sim card at the airport in Czech Republic then you will be in luck. All major international airports in Czech Republic have stores selling sim cards. Despite the prices being higher than normal, the staff are knowledgable and will be able to get you set up with the correct sim card relatively quickly.
If you want to avoid the inflated sim card prices you’ll find at the airport and your phone isn’t esim compatible, then you’re going to need to head in to a store to buy your sim card.
I recommend visiting one of the official retail stores of the mobile internet operators such as T-Mobile, Vodafone and O2. Your best option is to enter their names into Google Maps and find the branch closest to your hotel or accommodation. Typically the staff in the official stores in Czech Republic are knowledgable and helpful which means you can ensure you’ll walk away with a functioning sim card.
Despite this, it’s always a good idea to check your internet is working before you leave the store by loading a Google search results page and your preferred social media app. You should also ensure you always bring your passport with you when purchasing a sim card in case they need to register it.
If you like to be prepared and would prefer to arrive in Czech Republic with your sim card all sorted and your phone ready to connect to the internet immediately then you should look into purchasing a sim card online.
